Even as a boy, Alexander learns a secret he cannot bear to reveal, and as a result, he tries to accumulate as much knowledge as possible, as if in doing so he might be able to unlock the secrets of the universe itself. With a transparent style, Aryeh Lev Stollman has created a startling portrait of the soul of a young man on the verge of maturity. The Far Euphrates makes us wonder how it is possible to find meaning in life in a post-Holocaust world; where we can draw the line between sanity, madness, and transcendence; and what our responsibilities are to ourselves and others. The work astutely addresses the question of humanity's insatiable desire for knowledge and the rediscovery of its origins, the mythical and distant Euphrates of Eden, to which we cannot return. THE AUTHOR Aryeh Lev Stollman attended Yeshiva University in New York, where he studied the Talmud. He graduated in medicine from Albert Einstein Medical School. He is a neuroradiological surgeon in New York.
