Dalton Trevisan

With a foreword by Augusto Massi, Personal Anthology brings together an unprecedented collection of texts by Dalton Trevisan, one of the greatest short story writers in Brazilian literature.

From the constellation of his vast literary output, Dalton Trevisan selected 94 short stories. Racing his bicycle through the urban maze of cars, buses, and trucks, the cyclist overcomes all obstacles. Or does he? Before being illustrated by the multi-talented artist Odilon Moraes, the short story that inspired this unpublished edition was reworked by the author and republished several times over the years. *The Cyclist* appeared twice in the newspaper Gazeta do Povo in the 1950s, both as a report and as a fictional work. When it finally reached print, it was included in the author's celebrated works, such as Disasters of Love (1968), Mysteries of Curitiba (1968), and The Kiss on the Back of the Neck (2014), always offering a renewed portrait of the man in the saddle and the city in which he lives. The cyclist's courage and speed amidst urban dangers are celebrated by the narrator, while the "unwanted of the people" maintains its presence undaunted: death constantly insists on asking for a ride, even in the face of the refusal of the one it bothers, who pretends not to see it. However, even though he tries to ignore it, the man, "defenseless and fragile as he is," is left vulnerable before the giant monster, the truck, in its own labyrinth, the urban space, and suffers an accident. But no one can decipher Dalton's riddles, and the story ends shrouded in mystery. According to Augusto Massi, professor of Brazilian Literature at the University of São Paulo (USP), in a text that provides reading keys and tips for classroom work, "Dalton masterfully blends reality and fiction." Massi also believes that "turning the corner of the 21st century, the story remains extremely relevant. Just as Dalton Trevisan's moviola recreated the cyclist's odyssey in the space of a single day, illustrator Odilon Moraes managed to capture all the tragic and lyrical elements in a prolonged, cinematic traveling shot." The combination of Dalton's fast-paced prose and equally agile illustrations gave rise to Odilon's The Cyclist, a masterpiece that made the writing of one of our greatest living writers accessible to readers of all ages.

Dalton Trevisan, author of unforgettable short stories and winner of the main literary awards in the Portuguese language – such as the Camões Prize and the Machado de Assis Prize from the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL) –, and award-winning artist Eloar Guazzelli come together in this book to capture the essence of rainy days.

In 1951, the Gazeta do Povo newspaper published the first version of "Chuva," a short story by award-winning author Dalton Trevisan. And as a social phenomenon. In everyone's lives—those indoors or outdoors, downtown or on the outskirts—it is present. Rain prevails over rich and poor, humans and animals, living and dead, making no distinction between place, person, or social class. Everything is transformed with its arrival. And, drop by drop, throughout the story told in this work, a panorama of life in metropolises emerges, marked by the urban problems it causes in everyday life, as well as by the different realities of life we know all too well. "The story is structured around this dramatic back-and-forth between those besieged outside and those waging a fierce struggle to enter the house," writes Augusto Massi, professor of Brazilian Literature at the University of São Paulo (USP), in his text on the work, which provides keys to its reading and guidelines for classroom use. Little by little, Dalton reveals to us a social expression of rain. Through a series of questions, he hints at how rain affects the lives of those who work: 'What happened to the Turks selling apples on the street?'; 'Guards open their arms on the street corner and whistle: 'Why is it raining, Sir?'; 'And the ice cream vendor, what does he do with his ice cream?'"

The illustrations by award-winning artist Eloar Guazzelli brilliantly complement what Dalton Trevisan wrote in the early 1950s, reflecting aspects of our reality to this day. Between 1946 and 1948, he edited the magazine Joaquim, which featured articles by intellectuals such as Antônio Cândido, Mário de Andrade, and Otto Maria Carpeaux, as well as translations of Joyce, Proust, and Sartre.
