Despite her bourgeois background and her intention to not directly support the revolution, the book was considered subversive due to its sensitivity to labor issues. Furthermore, its protagonist gains heroine status, a role not generally reserved for young women of the time. The plot revolves around John Barton, a factory worker who raises his daughter, Mary, alone and leads a difficult life with the little he earns. Mary soon begins working as a seamstress to help her elderly father with his expenses. Unexpectedly, however, Mary Barton becomes enamored with the advances of Henry Carson, the son of the owner of the factory where her father works, despite her heart beating stronger for Jem, a young family friend and a factory worker like her father. Thus, the love triangle that permeates the plot is formed. Meanwhile, the social situation in Manchester worsens, and faced with a lack of jobs and the miserable wages on offer, workers choose to negotiate and protest. Gaskell presents us with a surprising ending, both for the social conflict and for the romantic outcome.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47175460258044,"sku":"9788501110312","price":89.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/2c4a76e6dac6a5670409e70bda973a19_6431f15e-13e0-4f5c-ac65-2856936353d3.jpg?v=1778324209"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.record.com.br\/en\/collections\/elizabeth-gaskell.oembed","provider":"Editora Record","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
