After all, government initiatives may or may not be successful, yielding good or bad results, regardless of which side of the ideological spectrum they originate from.

Technological advances and changes in the 21st century have set in motion a revolution, opening up new possibilities for state organization, thanks to new resources and new forms of action capable of providing services to a large number of people effectively and efficiently. Innovative initiatives implemented by governments of different orientations in different countries demonstrate this. Examples include the program created in India to grant its citizens a digital identity; the Dutch system that enabled personalized healthcare; and the electronic democratization of banking systems in Kenya.

However, as Prabhu shows, there are risks along the way. Large or small, if governments are to better understand technology and know how to use it, there must also be checks and balances regarding what the state (and market agents) should do with this newly acquired power. The "social credit" system implemented by the Chinese government is a good example of how new tools can, if misused, undermine citizens' rights.

With clarity of ideas, concrete examples, and an open mind, How a Government Should Be helps us think about the kind of government we want and how it should relate to new times and new forces in the organization of society.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/3c30e6e278d97e8a466c02c02d91e3a0_7877a35c-8d1f-40ae-a5d3-d5928668bfdb.jpg?v=1779765750
