I must say that the first, Visions of Colonial Rio de Janeiro, had already impressed me with the number and variety of accounts it contains. In fact, I must confess something in this regard: in my home library there are a good number of books by travelers and missionaries who passed through Brazil, or who were here. Incidentally, I have been collecting these works for a few decades (many...) and had the pretension of knowing the subject reasonably well. Isn't it true that I found, already in the first anthology, and now in this one, names I hadn't heard of?! It was even a bit humiliating, but on the other hand, and modesty aside, for me it was a good indication of the value of these two anthologies, and of the care and depth of the research Jean Marcel carried out. This way, it is not impossible that a third volume will emerge, which would be great for all of us who feel a special attraction to the works of travelers. But that's not all. The reader will certainly enjoy the accounts, and enjoy reading, which doesn't always go hand in hand. Now, reading shouldn't just be a source of knowledge—it should also be a source of pleasure. And that's what happens in both volumes. The information about the authors of the accounts and the bibliographies also deserve praise. I hope that both will serve as an incentive for other scholars, or Jean Marcel himself, to consider researching accounts related to other cities and provinces, such as Bahia, Pernambuco, Pará, Amazonas, and, in fact, the others as well. As a São Paulo native, I was even a bit jealous, but I recognize that the others deserve priority, as there isn't much about São Paulo in the colonial period (it might even be my ignorance...). In any case, it doesn't hurt to dream.\" - José Mindlin","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47175122059516,"sku":"9788503011259","price":69.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/53b3d1b7fdf46e8b67608df1bfe773e3.jpg?v=1778317928"},{"product_id":"a-construcao-do-brasil-na-literatura-de-viagem-dos-seculos-xvi-xvii-e-xvii","title":"The construction of Brazil in travel literature of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries","description":"A century after Gutenberg's invention of the printing press, travel accounts of the new continent were the primary means of disseminating the discoveries of Christopher Columbus, Pedro Álvares Cabral, and other navigators who set sail in the 16th century. The new world, which would later inspire the theories of philosophers such as Jean Jacques Rousseau and Michel de Montaigne, was a captivating subject for both readers and writers. Consequently, some of these books achieved significant print runs of up to 3,000 copies and dozens of reprints. A subject of study by Professor Jean Marcel Carvalho França since 1993, travel accounts, which have already given rise to Visions of Colonial Rio de Janeiro, Other Visions of Colonial Rio de Janeiro, and Women Travelers in Brazil, are once again the subject of The Construction of Brazil in Travel Literature of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Seventeenth Centuries, a new book published jointly by José Olympio Editora and Editora Unesp. This time, França demonstrates how Europeans drew on this type of literature to create an image of Brazil that, in some cases, endures to this day. Alternating between travel diaries and critical reflections, the professor presents the construction of the country's image, narrated from the perspective of foreigners of different social classes and backgrounds. Among the travelers are nobles who set sail, such as the Englishman Anthony Knivet, enslaved by Salvador Correia de Sá, brother of the founder of Rio de Janeiro; and the hard-drinking sailor François Pyrard de Laval, who received shelter in the castle of the French nobleman Pierre Bergeron in exchange for recounting his adventures overseas. Some books were so successful that they were reprinted four times in a single year and could be considered true bestsellers.","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47176263139580,"sku":"9788503010757","price":84.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/24e85772185edfaf30f68d6561183eeb.jpg?v=1778312555"},{"product_id":"viajantes-estrangeiros-no-rio-de-janeiro-joanino","title":"Foreign travelers in Rio de Janeiro joanino","description":"In *Travantes Exteriores no Rio de Janeiro Joanino*, Jean Marcel Carvalho França follows the same spirit as his previous books. In a work of meticulous research, he retrieves, translates, and analyzes narratives by foreigners who visited Rio de Janeiro during the colonial period (1809-1818). This fascinating work critically examines the evolution of Rio de Janeiro's culture, customs, and geography from a foreign perspective. The anthology presents a rich collection of texts by foreign travelers who passed through the country between 1809 and 1818. It is an essential work for understanding the process of building Rio de Janeiro and Brazil from a European perspective.","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47176905359612,"sku":"9788503011860","price":49.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/a60680f1368cdab4f6c8977bafa2531e_87c5efd9-ba44-4461-a24f-29067e64ec3f.jpg?v=1778320644"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.record.com.br\/en\/collections\/jean-marcel-carvalho-franca.oembed","provider":"Editora Record","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
