{"title":"Julio Ludemir","description":"","products":[{"product_id":"sorria-voce-esta-na-rocinha","title":"Smile, you're in Rocinha","description":"The industry of poverty in Rio's favelas is the subject of journalist Julio Ludemir's new book. After exploring the prison system and the drug world in *No coração do comando*—where the niece of one of the founders of the Terceiro Comando falls in love with one of the Comando Vermelho's strongmen—Ludemir delves into the daily life of Rio's favelas. *Smile, you're in Rocinha* depicts the reality of Brazil's most famous poor community and the largest favela in Latin America, nestled in Rio de Janeiro's South Zone. \"In Rocinha, as in other favelas in Rio, there is a thriving industry of poverty, which exploits every crisis the community experiences, including the current drug war, to sell new projects,\" argues Ludemir. Accustomed to the sway and street smarts of Rio's favelas, Ludemir expected trouble with drug traffickers, who were increasingly concerned about journalists roaming their back alleys, ready to expose their illicit activities. But a surprise awaited him in Rocinha. The author's problem didn't just involve drug trafficking soldiers—accused of betraying the local drug lord, the journalist even faced trial, where he was acquitted. The other option was death. This time, the villain role was shared with NGOs. Non-governmental organizations, according to the author, became the other power in Rio's favelas, managing and controlling the information given to journalists. \"For the people of Rocinha, the guy who takes over an NGO or a residents' association doesn't do it for the public good. He goes there to get ahead, like any obtuse city councilman. I heard this from the first to the last day of my stay in the favela,\" explains Ludemir. Smile, you're in Rocinha began to take shape after the article \"Rocinha Inc.\" published in Veja magazine. A study on the booming economy that led entrepreneurs from the asphalt to invest in the favela. \"The attraction became inevitable when anthropologist Marcos Alvito and I took a late-night stroll through the favela, without anyone approaching us,\" the author argues. From that moment on, Ludemir saw Rocinha as an open community, without an owner and without the terror of the narco-dictatorship, painted in such strong colors by the media. \"I decided to write the book, a great tribute to Rocinha's emancipation process and its great achievements, such as becoming a neighborhood.\" The book is a fictionalized report and possesses all the freedom offered by fiction, even when Ludemir was working with real events. But the central theme of Smile, You're in Rocinha is power in the favela. Or rather, the favela's powers. The middle class tends to think of favela residents as miserable citizens afflicted by or complicit with drug trafficking. But the favela has an elite, which, like all Brazilian elites, is irresponsible and lacking in social commitment. The division between those who have and those who have not. “My book is about the people who have it, the way this elite combined the asphalt to exploit the favela residents,” he concludes.","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47174509428988,"sku":"9788501068989","price":74.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/9c29670cff40f6c3bcaae4f3fe5eabd3_fe2f244f-16ec-448f-bad8-38d58ccbf725.jpg?v=1783706290"},{"product_id":"no-coracao-do-comando","title":"IN THE HEART OF COMMAND","description":"Journalist Júlio Ludemir spent every weekend in 2001 clocking in at a Rio de Janeiro prison. He had a good reason: to write the story of Valéria and Marquinho—the \"Romeo and Juliet\" of Rio de Janeiro prisons. She, the niece of a Third Command boss. He, a first-time member of the Red Command. This is the explosive and moving story of \"IN THE HEART OF THE COMMAND,\" Júlio Ludemir's debut novel. Valéria and Marquinho first crossed paths in the Frei Caneca Penitentiary Complex, and rival factions soon banned their romance. Inmates in neighboring prisons—Nelson Hungria and Milton Dias Moreira—Valéria and Marquinho ignored the ban. And, deeply in love, they starred for three years in a love story never before experienced within a prison. A love that could only end in tragedy, as in Shakespeare's classic. For almost two years, the two performed stripteases for each other in their cells and exchanged vows of love in notes. Marquinho even learned the alphabet for the deaf-mute to say \"I love you\" to Valéria. The love story captivated the author, who discovered it while reporting on the penal system for the online magazine no. The journalist became deeply involved in the story and maintained numerous contacts with the couple, at different times. He admits: \"I became very close to the couple, but I never stopped treating them like criminals.\" He witnessed up close all the violence and rivalry between the Comando Vermelho and the Terceiro Comando and the consequences of this conflict and hatred. Júlio wrote IN THE HEART OF THE COMANDO in one month, in one sitting, crying profusely, while thinking about the passion he himself had recently lost. In fact, the entire book revolves around love, from motivation to inspiration. During his research for the book, Júlio delved into the delicate wounds of the city that serves as the novel's backdrop and uncovered important facts that had been left out of the plot. According to the author, \"violence in Tijuca has increased considerably due to unemployment in drug dens. There's a surplus of labor for drug trafficking in the favelas,\" he says. He also reveals that \"a new drug distribution process is emerging in Rio. Small drug dens (points of sale) that would be the McDonald's of drugs.\" As unexpected as new Montagues and Capulets with grenades in hand, in an eternal dispute over the favelas of the Marvelous City, IN THE HEART OF COMMAND blends a great deal of reality with a small dose of fiction in a moving and revealing way. Julio Ludemir was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1960 but grew up in Olinda, Pernambuco. A journalist, publicist, and translator, he has written short stories, plays, and film scripts. He is a composer for a rock band in Rocinha called Gana, a goalkeeper for a team in the Acari favela, participates in social projects in São Carlos and has two children.","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47174975029500,"sku":"9788501063571","price":49.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/2b13915e02638149055eb4c637edeb84.jpg?v=1783707227"},{"product_id":"o-bandido-da-chacrete","title":"O BANDIDO DA CHACRETE","description":"Depois de No coração do comando, onde explora o sistema carcerário, e Sorria: você está na Rocinha, onde fala da indústria da miséria nos morros cariocas, o jornalista pernambucano Julio Ludemir mergulha de novo no submundo.
