Dying is also the last refuge of his will, since his present life is merely a slow counting of days in a middle-class apartment by the beach. The sea feeds the memory of a certain former physical and virile exuberance that heightens the awareness of his present misery; just as, more poignantly, it is associated with the memory of the death of his son, a former companion in maritime adventures, which he never fully survived.
