Formou-se em Filosofia e fez mestrado e doutorado em Educação na Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, na qual começou a dar aulas em 1977, com docência e pesquisa na Pós-Graduação em Educação e no Departamento de Teologia e Ciências da Religião; nela se aposentou como professor titular 35 anos depois. Professor convidado da Fundação Dom Cabral (desde 1997) e do GVpec da FGV-SP (entre 1997 e 2009), foi secretário municipal de Educação de São Paulo (1991-1992). É comentarista e colunista em programas de rádio e televisão, além de ter presença constante nas mídias digitais e redes sociais (com mais de 16 milhões de seguidores).
