Antes de ingressar no mundo da produção em sistemas agroflorestais com o botânico suíço Ernst Götsch, morou durante cinco anos num mosteiro zen, onde aprendeu medicina chi­nesa, tendo sido terapeuta por mais de 10 anos. Foi estudante de bio­logia marinha e estudou arquitetura na França, mas foi nos sistemas de agroflorestas que desenvolveu o seu trabalho, compartilhando seu conhecimento.
