Its objective is, above all, to show that the modern is grounded in discourse, and that its structure is recurrent not only in the interpretation of facts but also in the way geography presents its main epistemological debates. The general identity of modernity is viewed from a new perspective, and several classic authors of geography are reexamined in light of this new interpretation. Geography and Modernity is required reading for those interested in debates about the nature of geography, but it is also intended for all those who question the identity of the modern fact.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/6c0b6ee4f2dc426a4526037d2178cf53_648491e8-2d8f-4d4a-ab93-4432622ec99d.jpg?v=1781150429
brasil-questoes-atuais-da-reorganizacao-do-territorio
Brazil: Current Issues in Territorial Reorganization

Brazil: Current Issues in Territorial Reorganization is part of an editorial project that aims to renew the thematic content of Brazilian Geography. Its overarching goal is to offer an up-to-date, high-quality, and easily accessible and understandable national bibliography, without compromising the complexity required to address the topics.

At the same time, its content reflects the need to communicate new perspectives that have been gaining ground in geographical thought and that focus primarily on Brazilian space. It is, therefore, the product of a mature academic community that, having developed certain lines of thought, seeks to disseminate them not only among its peers but also to a wider readership interested in up-to-date information about the country.

Thus, all the articles in this volume investigate the dynamics that, directly or indirectly, influence the organization of space in Brazil. They thus return public resources invested through the University and other research funding institutions, especially CNPq and FINEP, to their rightful owners, Brazilian society.

This is a significant dimension of academic research, especially in the current context of discussions on the university-society relationship, reinforcing the former's commitment to producing up-to-date, consistent, and useful information for the latter. Brazilian Geography, once again, fulfills its role of making visible the dynamics to which the national territory is subject.

Taken together, the works that comprise the book demonstrate the specificity of geographic science, which articulates different levels of analysis, enabling diverse interpretations of the same phenomenon—a fundamental epistemological attribute of geography. Since the geographic approach to reality faces the basic problem of size, which ranges from local to planetary space, and since territory is the axis of the problems discussed here, the notion of scale of phenomena contributes as a fundamental methodological resource in addressing these issues.

In this sense, the works gathered here constitute empirical material that allows us to reflect on some propositions useful for understanding the operationality of the scale of the phenomena studied, with the organization of the themes presented based on the already traditional approaches to geographical analyses, that is, global, national, regional and local, not to obey criteria of preserving a tradition, but as an operational mode of the geographical treatment of phenomena.

Brazil: Current Issues in Territorial Reorganization is a coherent collection of texts resulting from diverse research, whose central focus is the study of the new dynamics at work in restructuring the national territory. What is the common ground upon which geographic understanding operates? These are some of the fundamental questions addressed in Geographical Frameworks , a work recommended not only for undergraduate and graduate students, but also for all those curious to discuss and understand the properties and competencies of geographic knowledge.

"Geography is an original way of thinking. This is the hypothesis announced in the very first pages of Quadros Geográficos. As the reading progresses, the initial hypothesis unfolds into a fruitful statement: geography is a graphic way of structuring thought, founded on description, and whose elementary instrument is the frame. Taken broadly, the frame here designates any surface on which diverse elements are presented according to basic principles of location, extension, and morphology. The geographical reasoning that relies on this instrument is one that constructs meanings from the interplay of positions between spatially located elements, assembled in a composition that can be revealed graphically.

If the book's hypothesis is bold, its argumentative style is equally ambitious. The same frameworks that constitute the work's object serve as a resource to guide the reader through the demonstration of the central idea. Like frames, the chapters propose new perspectives that give rise to unprecedented associations between famous figures and their ideas—Ptolemy, Strabo, Kant, Humboldt, Vidal de La Blache, to name a few. Regrouped through new arrangements, these figures and ideas sometimes come closer together, sometimes further apart, although they are never conceived as determining one another. The continuities and transformations revealed by these frameworks also suggest new keys for interpreting the development of this singular way of thinking about the world, to which the ancient Greeks associated the evocative and polyphonic word grafia (drawing, mark, inscription, record).

Because of its concise form and the pleasure it provides, reading Quadros Geográficos is like listening to a piece of music. The book can be skimmed through in its entirety to get a sense of the whole. Given the sophistication of its arguments, however, it deserves to be read and performed repeatedly, lingering over the phrases, passages, and connections. The arrangement's structure is that of a theme with variations. After the initial exposition, the fundamental idea is reiterated, with alterations, and developed in a sequence of episodes that summon new "voices" to present different statements on the same theme. Therefore, we know the work's point of arrival from the opening, but it is only by following the path proposed by the author that the idea manifests itself in its full power, thus revealing a new horizon of questions. It is a listening experience that will certainly captivate curious and imaginative minds and, above all, those open to the pleasure of reflection. - Leticia Parente Ribeiro (Department of Geography/UFRJ)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/e106d9961c20660d8b9c46b5d2ae2689_daa049d2-ac84-4925-b560-e817864fce11.jpg?v=1778323572
o-lugar-do-olhar
The place of the gaze
The True Geography of the Gaze, by Paulo Cesar da Costa Gomes, is an invitation to the spatial interpretation of images and the phenomenon of visibility itself and, above all, a stimulus for the reader to reflect visually on places, recovering the sense of observation. In this way, he makes visible that which would otherwise go unnoticed. Through short accounts of the evolution of geography, the history of art, architecture, urbanism, and modern urban life, the author leads the reader to explore and analyze representations—spatial visualization devices—that, thus assembled, allow them, little by little, to unravel the complex web that conditions perception and contingency, the understanding of what presents itself to the gaze. The Place of the Gaze is based on the hypothesis that what is seen and how it is seen depends, in large part, on where one's gaze is situated.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/6948db563aaefd35b7288fe9f012326e_0a8ddba9-abac-4c2e-a146-0a0fc62530fe.jpg?v=1778317723
a-condicao-urbana
THE URBAN CONDITION
The Urban Condition – Essays on the Geopolitics of the City is an eloquent demonstration of the relevance and richness of analyzing physical space for understanding certain phenomena, a dimension often neglected in studies produced by the social sciences. This work requalifies the importance and scope of contemporary geography, especially with regard to interpretations of sociopolitical dynamics. In this sense, citizenship, sovereignty, and public space are some of the categories reconsidered in light of their relationship with spatiality. The author seeks, first and foremost, to construct general categories that express ways of conceiving space, nomospace, and genospace. From there, he examines, in several instances, how these categories can help us reflect on the idea of rights and duties, and how this idea materializes in physical and behavioral forms at various times and places in urban life. The title The Urban Condition expresses the conception that the city is the combination of a certain social structure with a precise physical form. One cannot exist or be understood without the other, and therefore, the examination of urban dynamics must necessarily also focus on the physical layout or, in other words, the geographic dimension of these phenomena. The author, Paulo César da Costa Gomes, holds a PhD from the University of Paris-Sorbonne and is dedicated to teaching and research in the epistemological field of geography. Since 1995, he has taught at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and, for four years (1997-2000), was a visiting professor in France, at the University of La Rochelle.
