The greatest novelty of this rich and thought-provoking book lies in the guiding thread chosen to construct its historical narratives, which competently embodies a historiographical approach, emphasizing continuous transformations rather than explosive ruptures, in keeping with a methodology we adopted beginning in the last quarter of the 20th century. By focusing on the notion of empire, the chapters of this work demonstrate the felicity of this conceptual decision, especially useful for identifying the similarities and differences in scientific practices then prevalent in \"Portuguese\" territories. Although \"empire\" is a political category, the way it is approached here allows for the recovery of actors, who deserve to be understood as creators of knowledge, without the intelligibility of their actions being conditioned by political decisions made in the metropolis.
