It's impossible to tell the story of Brazilian music and the country itself without mentioning Angela Maria. Her astonishing popularity earned her amassed records throughout her life: thousands of records sold, over fifty songs on the charts, hundreds of trophies, over 250 magazine covers, countless weekly press reviews, and the length of her career itself—about 65 uninterrupted years recording and performing to packed houses. But, before becoming Brazil's most popular singer and the "highest-earning radio artist" of her time, Angela Maria endured a miserable childhood and fierce resistance from her religious parents. Later, already famous, she went from heaven to hell in her personal life, deceived by her husband-managers. However, with an incredible capacity for overcoming obstacles, she survived it all, including the most diverse musical fads, becoming a legend of national culture and influencing countless artists. In this new major work of research and biographical narrative, Rodrigo Faour presents us in detail the impressive trajectory of this great singer.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/cb4f8ca742e1127dce56e73ae59c6755_a009d3f3-34ba-4e3b-b8d2-522b5ef793ae.jpg?v=1778326203
historia-da-musica-popular-brasileira-sem-preconceitos-vol-1
History of Brazilian Popular Music: Without Prejudice (Vol. 1)

Rodrigo Faour returns with this first masterful and comprehensive volume on the history of Brazilian popular music, from 1500 to the 1970s.

After exploring the Sexual History of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) and the biographies of Angela Maria, Dolores Duran, Cauby Peixoto, and Claudette Soares, Rodrigo Faour embarks on an even more ambitious project: creating a panorama of Brazilian popular music from the late 15th century, when the Portuguese arrived in Brazil, to the present day. Her recordings disappeared from the radio, but her few beautiful compositions never stopped being re-recorded. Now this gap is finally being filled with the release of the book "Dolores Duran: The Night and Songs of a Fascinating Woman," published by journalist, producer, and music researcher Rodrigo Faour through Editora Record. The book is a comprehensive study. It included more than 70 interviewees, including those who knew the artist and her admirers, who helped immortalize her work to this day; hundreds of mentions of her name in the press, dating back to her emergence in the artistic world in 1942 as a child actress; and an incredible photographic panel that forms a 48-page illustrated libretto. Faour reveals that Dolores Duran (1930-1959) was a woman far ahead of her time and somewhat precocious. Due to a congenital heart condition, she knew her life would not be long, so she tried to live everything intensely – her career, her loves, her friends, the nightlife. Since she was a pre-teen, she frequented children's theater and talent shows. At 19, she debuted as a crooner at the chic Vogue nightclub in Copacabana and was hired by the legendary Rádio Nacional, where she remained until almost the end of her life. Over time, she gained prestige and the friendship of the greatest chroniclers and intellectuals of Rio's bohemian scene, becoming one of the group's favorites. She sat at tables, chatting on equal terms with Antonio Maria, Vinicius de Moraes, Fernando Lobo, Sérgio Porto, Mister Eco, Mário Lago, and many other chroniclers and composers – the same ones who delighted in hearing her sing in every nightclub of the time. And no wonder... Highly intelligent, despite having dropped out of school after fifth grade, she not only read about the greatest authors, poets, painters, and whatever else struck her fancy, but was also self-taught in languages, speaking, reading, writing, and singing perfectly, and was always asked to perform the international hits of those golden years. Armed with incredible good taste—she hated cheesiness—she interspersed this repertoire with the best of the Brazilian songbook of the time. Eclectic, she ranged from baião to marchinha, from bolero to chanson française, from salsa to fox. Although she was an excellent singer, she never achieved as much popularity as some of her contemporaries, such as Dalva de Oliveira, Angela Maria, or Maysa. Nevertheless, she helped promote the work of authors such as Billy Blanco ("A banca do diferente," "Praça Mauá," "Pano legal"), Chico Anysio ("A fia de Chico Brito"), and Antonio Maria & Ismael Netto ("Canção da volta"). The composer and lyricist, on the other hand, was acclaimed and celebrated from the outset. This book reveals firsthand that, despite her limited body of work, composed mostly in the last three years of her life, Dolores is the most recorded composer in Brazil to date, with around 850 different re-recordings of gems such as "A Noite do Meu Bem," "Castigo," and "Solidão," as well as collaborations with pianist Ribamar ("Ternura Antiga," "Pela Rua"), Carlos Lyra ("O Negócio É Amar"), and Tom Jobim ("Por Causa de Você" and "Estrada do Sol"). As if all this weren't enough, she was a fun, flirtatious, and fascinating woman, very different from the one immortalized in her poems and songs, which were generally sad and melancholic, albeit with slightly ironic nuances in some of them. She was also politicized (she joined and deserted communism – after a pioneering trip to Eastern Europe, during the Iron Curtain era), religious (from Umbanda to Catholicism), and was also a good seamstress, a great cook and a great joke teller, in addition, of course, to having been one of the frank precursors of the Bossa Nova movement that took off as soon as she was gone.

The second volume of History of Brazilian Popular Music – Without Prejudice provides a complete mapping from the late 1970s to the early 2020s.

Rodrigo Faour, in the first volume of Historia da Música Popular Brasileira (History of Brazilian Popular Music ), warned that there isn't just one Brazilian popular music, but rather many, each with its own distinct style. This volume includes, for example, mini-chapters on the songbooks of Pará, Maranhão, Pernambuco, Bahia, and Rio Grande do Sul, as well as phenomena from São Paulo that are more restricted to the state, such as punk rock and the São Paulo avant-garde. or because they are, in theory, “less Brazilian”, like the more unpretentious pop, soul, disco and dance music, axé-music, electronic forró, funk carioca and hip-hop.

Without aesthetic prejudices, this work showcases all types of artists and musical styles, highlights their most relevant songs or acts, leaving the reader free to draw their own conclusions regarding their quality or importance and the intense transformations that our music market and, more than that, our popular music has undergone in recent decades.

"Rodrigo Faour's book is already good from the title onward.
