Today's world is marked by discourses of insecurity, policies, and even preventive wars, where the present is often experienced as if people were permanently on the edge, on the borders. Living on the Edge analyzes this new reality and how territorial controls become more complex and fundamental. The book is divided into two parts: in the first, more conceptual in nature, the author questions the zonal or area-based logic of spatial management and the new role of the State. In the second section, the processes of deterritorialization are analyzed from the perspective of security and biopolitics that characterize contemporary society. It is from this context that dynamics emerge that, beyond simple precariousness and territorial seclusion, involve what is called territorial containment and exclusion—quite evident in the case of a megalopolis like Rio de Janeiro.
Vidal, Vidals: Texts on Human, Regional, and Political Geography, edited by Rogério Haesbaert, Sergio Nunes Pereira, and Guilherme Ribeiro, analyzes the ideas and legacy left by Paul Vidal de la Blache. Fundamental to the evolution of geography in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he had faith in science and, more particularly, in the discipline to which he devoted all his efforts: human geography. Paul Vidal de la Blache was a central figure in the academic development of geography and its dialogue with other social sciences. With talent and determination, he redefined the discipline's methodological principles and research style, gaining immediate recognition among his generation and those who followed. His work has endured, provoking praise, criticism, and reinterpretation, as only great authors can. Today, his legacy is open to inspection, fostering a better appreciation of past and contemporary geographical thought. In Vidal, Vidais, the three authors present three integrated parts, in which they emphasize Vidal's innovative character in Human Geography and demonstrate the strength of his thought in two particular fields: Regional Geography, with a rich and multiple trajectory in conceptual terms, and Political Geography, in which a little-known intellectual emerges, involved with the political issues of his time.

Book by the author of The Myth of Deterritorialization

At once a book of stories and a geographical and historical reflection, Rogério Haesbaert introduces us to the multiple spaces that, through travel or in everyday life itself, unfold—from the East (China, India, Vietnam...) to the West (Cuba, Mexico, Colombia...)—at different moments over the last 25 years. The stories begin in distant places, involving journeys marked by the strength of their differences (such as to Tibet, to towns in northern Vietnam, or to villages in Madagascar), until arriving at spaces of daily living and experience that are supposedly safer, but which are nevertheless free from surprise and the unusual that instigate questioning and change.

This is a book of chronicles, memories, more spontaneous accounts, many of them of travels, of narratives written in the heat of experience, of direct contact with others and their many places, of present-day history and accumulated geography that, at the same time as they announce themselves, through their diversity, are also transforming themselves/us.

"
In The myth of deterritorialization , Rogério Haesbaert questions the discourse of the "end of territories" and proposes the concept of multiterritoriality, observing deterritorialization as the precarious territorialization of groups such as the homeless and the landless .

"The myth of deterritorialization is the myth of those who imagine that man can live without territory, that society and space can be dissociated, as if the movement of destruction of territories were not always, in some way, their reconstruction on new foundations. Territory is focused here from a geographical perspective, intrinsically integrative, always in process, territorialization as dominion (political-economic) and the appropriation (symbolic-cultural) of space by human groups. Neoliberal globalization ended up spreading the myth of the "end of territories" (often confused with the "end of the State"), where the "annihilation of space by time" would be responsible for much of the "space-territorial prejudice" that increasingly enveloped territories in a negative charge, seen more as obstacles to "progress" and mobility, to the point of (theoretically, at least) submerging them in the sea of "fluidity" or networks that dissolve and disintegrate everything. The great dilemma of this beginning of the millennium is not not the phenomenon of deterritorialization, as suggested by authors such as Paul Virilio, but that of multiterritoriality, the exacerbation of the possibility, which has always existed, but never at contemporary levels, of experiencing different territories simultaneously, constantly reconstructing our own. Deterritorialization would in fact be the extremely precarious territorialization to which the "human clusters" of the homeless, the landless, and the many minority groups are increasingly subjected in their struggle for the "minimum territory" of shelter and daily comfort.
\
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/2d6f18224226ee22271971bfa07ae1c0_fd3985f3-98a9-45a6-9e78-d72e9e7e4202.jpg?v=1778325916
