Viktor's intention was to embrace the aesthetics of the Modern Movement, which flourished briefly but brilliantly during the first republic of Czechoslovakia. The couple encounters a new world when they meet the visionary architect Rainer von Abt—a disciple of Adolf Loos, an icon of modern architecture. Together, the three plan every detail of the construction. The intention was to create a place that had nothing to do with the past, filled with light and devoid of ornament, symbolizing the optimism of the post-war period. Thus, Das Landauer Haus, The Landauer House, emerged, with its extraordinary Glass Room becoming Von Abt's most celebrated creation. A modernist masterpiece in glass and steel, erected on a travertine floor and supported by an onyx wall, it was a true piece de resistance. The house became a landmark, a stage for recitals and emblematic gatherings—in addition to harboring, and even inciting, deeply complex questions for all the characters who interacted there. But when the Nazi invasion began, the couple was forced to abandon everything and flee the country. The house was taken over by the Germans, then occupied by the Soviets, and finally passed to the Czechoslovak government, with the crystalline perfection of the Glass Room always exerting a gravitational pull on those who knew it.
