{"title":"Slavomir Rawicz","description":"","products":[{"product_id":"caminho-da-liberdade","title":"Path to freedom","description":"How long can a man weakened by physical and psychological torture last? Malnourished, buried in his own excrement, day after day tempted by the promise of freedom in exchange for a false confession? In 1939, the slender and elegant Polish cavalry lieutenant Slavomir Rawicz was about to find out. Arrested by the Soviets during the Russo-Germanic partition of Poland, he was brutally beaten to confess his alleged role as a spy. The son of a Russian mother, fluent in the language, Rawicz became the perfect suspect, a defendant for a crime never committed. Only a passing pass to one of the cruelest prison systems in the world. Without his well-tailored uniform and gleaming boots, stripped of all dignity, a routine of pain, filth, and degradation would be his new reality. But young Rawicz never surrendered. A firm part of his spirit clung to the unshakable idea that to give in would be death. And he wanted to live. With the help and company of six other prisoners, he escaped from the Yakutsk camp in 1941. On foot, on an incredible journey through the most inhospitable regions of the planet, armed only with an ax and a knife, they left Siberia. They crossed China, the Gobi Desert, and the Himalayas until they entered India... and gained freedom. ROAD TO FREEDOM is the account of this incredible march. A moving—often poetic—testimony of the human capacity for overcoming adversity, solidarity, and the relentless pursuit of justice. Slavomir Rawicz emigrated to England after World War II, settling on the outskirts of Nottingham, where he worked as a craftsman. He married an Englishwoman, with whom he had five children. In 1975, he retired after a heart attack and lived a quiet life in the countryside until his death in 2004. A memorial to all who live and die in the fight for freedom, The Long Walk was released as Freedom Rider, directed by Peter Wier — Witness, The Truman Show and Master and Commander — and starring Colin Farrell. “One of the epic marches of the human race. Shackleton, Franklin, Amudsen... history is full of people who crossed immense distances and survived against horrific odds. None of them, however, achieved Rawicz's extraordinary feat. He and his companions crossed an entire continent—the Siberian Arctic, the Gobi Desert, and the Himalayas—with nothing more than an ax, a knife, and a week's worth of food... His account is so full of despair and suffering that it is almost impossible to read. But it must be read. And reread.” Sebastian Junger, author of The Perfect Storm “A poet with steel in his soul.” New York Times “One of the most extraordinary and heroic stories of this or any time.” Chicago Tribune “A book filled with the spirit of human dignity and the courage of men in search of freedom.” Los Angeles Times","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47159416029436,"sku":"9788501089458","price":79.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/a1f55a56950b3831de4c451732d2d131_ee430c11-aef3-4838-8bb4-9e01dc1bf707.jpg?v=1778324207"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.record.com.br\/en\/collections\/slavomir-rawicz.oembed","provider":"Editora Record","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
