The result of four years of research is an unprecedented editorial feat in Brazil. Chao established criteria to obtain the most representative result possible and immersed himself in a difficult and enjoyable literary investigation across countries. He brought together the best literature from Belize and Curaçao, for example, alongside internationally renowned names – Junot Díaz, Jonathan Frazen, Sherman Alexie, among others. Countries of continental dimensions, Brazil, and the United States were divided by region. Representing the literature of the American South, Chao selected Richard Ford, while Alexie appears for the West, and so on. In Brazil, Alberto Mussa, Luiz Ruffato, and Marçal Aquino, for example, represent the Southeast. \"I wanted a dialogue between these authors, particularly between the Brazilians and others. I wanted to create this bridge between contemporary Brazilian literature and the rest of the continent's production,\" says the organizer. Chao, a Frenchman living in Brazil, subverts the very concept of Latin America, which he believes is inadequate because it almost always leaves out the Antilles and other French-speaking regions. \"The idea was to create a different anthology, one that would cover the entire continent, thus creating a bridge between Latin America and English-speaking America, which are often ignored,\" he explains. Breaking down borders and transcending labels—Latin America versus North America—is the goal of Pan-American Anthology. It's an unusual opening for what's being written on the continent today. A window into the best of the short story genre. Stéphane Chao was born in La Rochelle, France, in 1974. He was director of the Book Office at the French Embassy in Brazil between 1999 and 2003. Since then, he has worked as an international literary agent, particularly promoting Brazilian writers. In 2007, he created the Cunhambebe Prize for Foreign Literature in Brazil. He currently lives in Rio de Janeiro.
