Sylvia Orthof was born in Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro, in 1932. She took courses in mime, drawing, painting, drama, and theater at the Educação pelo Teatro school in Paris between 1950 and 1952. In the following years, she worked as an actress at the Teatro Brasileiro de Comédia and in teleplays on TV Record. In 1954, she appeared in the film \"O Gigante da Pedra,\" by Walter Hugo Khouri. From 1956 to 1960, she worked on developing puppet theater for children and theater for fishermen in Nova Viçosa, Bahia. From 1960 to 1964, she was a theater professor at the University of Brasília (DF), where she worked on the production of a university theater. At the time, she directed the puppet theater program Teatro Candanguinho on TV Brasília. In 1975, Sylvia Orthof's Rehearsal House was founded in Rio de Janeiro, dedicated exclusively to children's shows. In 1981, she published her first children's book, Mudanças no Galinheiro Mudam as Coisas por Inteiro (Changes in the Chicken Coop Change Things Entirely). By 1995, she had published approximately 120 books for children. She received the Jabuti Prize for Children's Literature for the book \"A Vaca Mimosa e a Mosca Zenilda\" in 1983, and the Ofélia Fontes Prize for the collection \"Amista é se lhe Parece\" (It Seems Like That), along with Angela Carneiro and Lia Neiva, in 1995. Sylvia Orthof died in 1997, leaving behind more than 120 published titles. Elizabeth Teixeira graduated in Industrial Design from the School of Fine Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and taught at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC\/RJ).
