Historian Tristram Hunt corrects this notion and shows that this role was much more active. Although the romanticism and heroism of the prose came from Marx, much of the intellectual work bears Engels's mark. More than a mere sponsor of Marx's cause, the correspondence between the two points to a dynamic partnership. In A COMMUNIST IN A DRESSED FIELD, Hunt lifts Engels out of Marx's shadow. And he does for him what Francis Wheen recently did for Karl Marx: he rescues, in brilliant prose, a real Engels. Almost a poet, far from the imaginary of the bloodthirsty Bolshevik. Engels was nearly 50 when he decided to dedicate himself full-time to the revolutionary cause. He maintained appearances as a bourgeois, separating his capitalist and communist existences. He despised capitalism because it denied the common man the most important thing: pleasure. Born into a prosperous mercantile family, Friedrich Engels enjoyed fox hunting, was a member of the Royal Manchester Stock Exchange, and president of the city's Schiller Institute. He drank heavily and indulged in the finer things of a luxurious life, such as lobster salad, Château Margaux, Pilsener beer, women, and the latest fashions. This same Engels financed Karl Marx for forty years, cared for his daughters, calmed him in his fits of rage, and co-founded what would come to be known as Marxism. Hunt describes this duplicity and analyzes how a notorious bon vivant of Victorian England reconciled his personal life with his political philosophy. A COMMUNIST IN A FASHION FASHION is a story of friendship, social commitment, ideological struggles, and family betrayals, which paints a striking portrait of daily life in the 19th century.","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47176259141884,"sku":"9788501090775","price":99.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/2b2a479a6a87b0ef0e5f551e1b2045a7_33ec8bc6-07cd-4997-8d08-42af3d682153.jpg?v=1778325760"}],"url":"https:\/\/www.record.com.br\/en\/collections\/tristram-hunt.oembed","provider":"Editora Record","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
