Nasceu em Caratinga, cidade do interior de Minas Gerais, em 1932. Seu talento para as artes se manifestou cedo. Aos 6 anos, teve até um desenho publicado na imprensa mineira! Ainda na infância, uma professora criativa colaborou para o seu mergulho nos livros e nos gibis (assim eram chamadas as HQs). Ele descobriu ali o que queria ser na vida. Lançou sua inseparável turma de amigos como personagens de quadrinhos ao criar a revistinha \u003cem\u003ePererê\u003c\/em\u003e, em 1960. Com temáticas ainda atuais, a revista teve uma das maiores tiragens da época. Posteriormente, junto com outros artistas e jornalistas fundou e dirigiu o periódico \u003cem\u003eO Pasquim\u003c\/em\u003e, um marco da oposição ao regime militar. É artista gráfico, ilustrador, cartunista, caricaturista, jornalista e escritor com uma produção de décadas voltada para todos os públicos. \u003cem\u003eO Menino Maluquinho\u003c\/em\u003e é seu maior sucesso editorial, tendo sido adaptado para as mais diversas mídias.
