The new world, which would later inspire the theories of philosophers such as Jean Jacques Rousseau and Michel de Montaigne, was a captivating subject for both readers and writers. Consequently, some of these books achieved significant print runs of up to 3,000 copies and dozens of reprints. A subject of study by Professor Jean Marcel Carvalho França since 1993, travel accounts, which have already given rise to Visions of Colonial Rio de Janeiro, Other Visions of Colonial Rio de Janeiro, and Women Travelers in Brazil, are once again the subject of The Construction of Brazil in Travel Literature of the Sixteenth, Seventeenth, and Seventeenth Centuries, a new book published jointly by José Olympio Editora and Editora Unesp. This time, França demonstrates how Europeans drew on this type of literature to create an image of Brazil that, in some cases, endures to this day. Alternating between travel diaries and critical reflections, the professor presents the construction of the country's image, narrated from the perspective of foreigners of different social classes and backgrounds. Among the travelers are nobles who set sail, such as the Englishman Anthony Knivet, enslaved by Salvador Correia de Sá, brother of the founder of Rio de Janeiro; and the hard-drinking sailor François Pyrard de Laval, who received shelter in the castle of the French nobleman Pierre Bergeron in exchange for recounting his adventures overseas. Some books were so successful that they were reprinted four times in a single year and could be considered true bestsellers.","brand":"Totvsrj-record-dc","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":47176263139580,"sku":"9788503010757","price":84.9,"currency_code":"BRL","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0722\/9197\/5420\/files\/24e85772185edfaf30f68d6561183eeb.jpg?v=1778312555","url":"https:\/\/www.record.com.br\/en\/products\/a-construcao-do-brasil-na-literatura-de-viagem-dos-seculos-xvi-xvii-e-xvii","provider":"Editora Record","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
