The boy from Itabira, however, makes nothing; he simply watches others make them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eIt is from this vantage point, as a suspicious observer, that we see progress finally arrive in rural Brazil, imposing its fines and restrictions: it is forbidden to gallop along cobblestone streets, to spread white clothes among the graves in the cemetery, to pray loudly at dawn. But then the future poet asks himself: \"What can I do to not die in peace?\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e Carlos is sent to school, leaves his parents' home, ventures onto the train, studies Latin and grammar, stands out in student pamphlets, and earns the nickname Anarchist. The priests expel him from school, accusing him of \"mental insubordination.\" Rejected, the teenager loses his faith. He decides to stop being a \"saint\" and become \"clay and profanity, \/ a flawed human, an earthly sign.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n \u003cp\u003eRiding time—\"a chair in the sun, and nothing more\"—the poet grows up. Suddenly, he finds himself young and free in Belo Horizonte. Supported by his family, he frequents the literary scene, among the modernists of Café Estrela and Livraria Alves. He graduates in Pharmacy, but \"only in the frame.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e He's a loafer, he dates, and he sleeps. He hears the call of writing and public service, becomes a newspaper editor, writes for the Republican Party of Minas Gerais, but something bothers him. It's his \"dirty conscience,\" the remorse of being an \"unconvinced official scribe.\" He still harbors within himself the boy Carlos, the one from second grade, who dreamed of \"emitting flashes \/ of a literary sun.\" It wouldn't be long before it happened.
