Paulo Freire and Sérgio Guimarães discuss the possibilities that new media offer teachers in the classroom. They also advocate for their use in educational policy that empowers students with the critical thinking skills essential for developing citizenship, respect for diversity, and the exercise of politics.

This edition also features an unpublished preface by award-winning professor and author Luiz Antonio Simas.

*

In 1963, in Angicos, in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte, three hundred rural workers were taught to read and write in just 40 hours using the method proposed by Paulo Freire. This was the result of the pilot project of what would become the National Literacy Program under the government of João Goulart, the president who would later be deposed in March 1964. In October of that same year, Freire left Brazil to protect his own life. He only returned to the country in 1979, with the democratic opening.

Throughout his career, Paulo Freire has received more than one hundred honorary doctorates from various national and international universities, as well as numerous awards, including the UNESCO Education for Peace Award and the Brazilian government's Order of Cultural Merit. Obviously, it only gives us information. I don't believe in people who think with the internet. But it eliminates the information problem. And people—teachers, educators—can dedicate themselves to explaining how to search for information, how to 'cut' information, since there is now such diversity, such a dizzying, daily accumulation of information, that it is necessary to 'cut' it. If someone tells you 'he's white,' maybe he's black, who knows! You need to seek out the sources, cross-reference them, and then, once again, apply the critical spirit."
\
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0722/9197/5420/files/5812c7f4fd1f54437ae181ca848f5933_4a8e9093-92f7-4bd6-b637-a8a5e9eac8a7.jpg?v=1778327152
