All we know about him is that he works for a newspaper as a music critic and that he spent his life among prostitutes. We can say he's a cultured man who never considered marriage. He even abandoned his fiancée on their wedding day. We also know that this nonagenarian's sexual appetite is impressive and that he has sex frequently.

To fulfill his sexual dream, the narrator turns to an old acquaintance, a retired pimp who had brokered business deals for him (prostitutes) in the past, and asks her to arrange the encounter. The difficulties of fulfilling this request are clear from the outset. But he will get what he wants, no matter the cost.

This woman then finds herself with a difficult task: how to find a virgin? The pimp then finds a 14-year-old girl who worked sewing buttons and cared for her younger siblings. She was waiting for the elderly man in a small room reserved for the most distinguished clients. The narrator puts on his best clothes and goes to the brothel. As the teenager is nervous, the pimp offers her a calming tea, and the young woman falls asleep. The woman then suggests the narrator fulfill his dream of taking the girl's virginity without waking her, to protect her from the pain of the experience. He undresses, but is afraid of taking advantage of the girl. So he finds a solution: he simply sleeps next to the girl, enjoying the sensation of being next to a woman.

Only when he wakes up next to the still pure nymphet will this character gain the humanity he lacked while running away from love.

A book for fans of the author, as well as fans of Latin American magical realism. For readers of Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, Pablo Neruda, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Isabel Allende.
