Sharing these concerns, we planned and organized the collection "O Brasil Republicano" (The Republican Brazil), in
five volumes: The time of oligarchic liberalism (revised edition), The time of national-statism (revised edition), The time of democratic experience (revised edition), The time of the authoritarian regime (revised edition) and The time of the New Republic.

This fifth volume of the collection brings together 13 chapters and covers the democratic period that began in 1985 and ended in 2016, with the political crisis that removed Dilma Rousseff from the Presidency of the Republic.

The year 1985 began with the death of President-elect Tancredo Neves, which led to his vice-president, José Sarney, becoming president of the Republic, in a government marked by traditional political practices and economic mismanagement. The first direct election after the authoritarian period led to the presidency of Fernando Collor de Mello, who was removed from office after impeachment. His vice-president, Itamar Franco, implemented an economic stabilization program: the Plano Real. Fernando Henrique Cardoso, for two terms, put Brazil on the path to neoliberalism. The Workers' Party rose to power, with two terms for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and two for Dilma Rousseff. However, the last term was cut short by impeachment—also defined as a coup d'état. Amidst this, the period's cultural and artistic production flourished and flourished, with Rock Brasil, literature, cinema, and the visual arts.

This edition of The Republican Brazil brings together texts by: Adelaide Gonçalves, Alessandra Carvalho, Américo Freire, Angélica Müller, Brasilio Sallum Jr., Claudia Viscardi, Stephen Rezende Martins, Fernando Perlatto, Francine Iegelski, Jorge Ferreira, José Ricardo Ramalho, Luiz Carlos Delorme Prado, Luiz Sérgio de Oliveira, Maria Antonieta p.
