From then on, several political projects vied for power in the country. The most active and influential at the time tried to assert themselves, resorting to arms, but were defeated: the liberals in 1932, the communists in 1935, and the integralists in 1938. The Constitutional Government gave way to the Estado Novo dictatorship. The Vargas administration encouraged the country's industrialization, sponsored a cultural policy that resonated with artists and intellectuals, and elevated workers to the status of central figures in the regime.
