He chose the small town of Tarascon for this purpose and created a character in whom naiveté is exaggerated: Tartarin. In creating him, he started from the old truth that caricature is the best way to attract the attention of our curious human race, always thirsty for ridicule—as long as others are ridiculous.\" There were three Tartarins in all. The second in Daudet's short series was Tartarin sur les Alpes, and the last attempt was Port-Tarascon.
