The construction of this book is, to a large extent, the construction of a line of thought that, while seemingly unambiguous upon completion, is in fact pluralistic and, nevertheless, surprisingly well-tuned. The work arose from the III Ibero-American Third Sector Meeting, held in September 1996 in Rio de Janeiro. The meeting included the Group of Institutes, Foundations, and Companies (Gife), which discussed the concept of the "Third Sector," its forms, and its limits. The term essentially refers to non-profit institutions that allocate resources to public purposes and non-governmental organizations.
