On the verge of madness

Who else can you trust when you can't trust yourself?

In The Edge of Madness , Cass has been consumed by guilt ever since the night she saw a woman parked in a car on the road near her home during a terrible storm and decided not to go out to help her. The next day, that same woman was found dead in that exact spot. Cass tries to convince herself that there was nothing she could have done. And perhaps, if she had gone to help her, she might be dead herself. But none of this is enough to assuage the anguish she feels, especially considering the fact that the murder happened right next door, very close to her isolated home—and that the killer is still at large.

Then, after the tragedy, Cass begins to experience memory lapses: she can't remember ordering a home alarm, she doesn't know where she left her car, much less why she would have bought a stroller when she doesn't even have children. The only thing she can't forget is Jane, the woman she could have saved, and the terrible guilt that eats away at her. Nor can she forget the silent phone calls she's been receiving, nor the feeling that she's being watched.

Could the killer have seen her standing on the side of the road, deciding whether to help the woman or not? Could he be trying to scare her into not telling the police? But how could anyone believe her fears when even she can't tell the truth from the lie? And how can Cass believe herself when everything around her seems to prove she's going crazy?
