Harry Hole's fourth case takes him from the cold of Oslo to the heat of northeastern Brazil on a hunt for an arch-nemesis.

Inspector Harry Hole feels lonely. His girlfriend, Rakel, is in Russia trying to gain custody of their son. So when an ex-girlfriend invites him to dinner, he accepts, thinking it's just an innocent encounter. But the situation spirals out of control, and the next day Harry wakes up with a terrible hangover, with no memory of the previous night's events.

As soon as he arrives at work, an Oslo police inspector discovers that his ex is dead. She was brutally murdered inside her own home. Confused, he begins to doubt himself, and to make matters worse, he begins receiving threatening emails. Is someone trying to frame him?

As the head of the suspect list, Harry is tasked with discovering who is behind a series of bank robberies in Oslo. The clues he uncovers lead him to believe the crimes are connected. Determined to unravel the mysteries surrounding the cases, he is taken from the autumnal cold of Oslo's streets to the searing heat of Northeast Brazil, under constant threat from an archenemy.
