The national phenomenon is so present and widespread today that many take it for granted. We are moved when we hear the national anthem, our hearts beat faster when the national team scores goals, and many even kill and die in defense of the nation. This book, by analyzing this phenomenon in different countries and periods, seeks to denaturalize it, presenting it as a historical, cultural, and political construct. The National Experience brings together 15 historians who consider nationalism and its intricate relationships with states, at different times throughout the 19th and 20th centuries in Angola, Portugal; Germany, Argentina, China, Spain, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Palestine, Russia; Brazil, Canada; and the United States.
