Sinopse

A vivid and compelling portrait of a woman's struggle for personal and professional fulfillment in a society teetering between tradition and modernity. The henna painter opens the reader to a world—post-independence India—that is at once lush and enchanting, harsh and cruel.

Fleeing an abusive marriage, seventeen-year-old Lakshmi finds herself in the vibrant Pink City of Jaipur in the 1950s. There, she becomes the most sought-after henna artist—and confidante—for women in India's high society. But, guarding the secrets of the wealthy, she can never reveal her own...

Known for her beautifully intricate designs and wise counsel, Lakshmi must act with discretion and caution to avoid the envious gossip that could destroy her reputation and end her livelihood. While pursuing her dream of independence, she is surprised by her husband, who has tracked her down after many years and even brought a spirited young woman in tow—a sister Lakshmi never knew she had.

Suddenly, the life she has so carefully created for herself is threatened. Lakshmi is determined to move forward and achieve everything she desires, but the past may stand in her way. With vibrant characters, sumptuous settings, and engaging prose, The Henna Painter is an unforgettable read.
