The tranquility

Rebeka Weér, once a famous actress, now lives cloistered in her apartment. Forbidden to continue her career by the totalitarian Hungarian government after her violinist daughter fled to the West, she locks herself in the house until her last day and watches her son Andor's every move. Unable to cope with his mother's tyrannical nature, but fearful of abandoning her, he eventually becomes sympathetic to Rebeka's isolation and begins sending her letters as if they had been written by her sister. Attila Bartis narrates with breathtaking intensity the life of the aspiring writer, his Oedipal relationship with his reclusive mother, and his turbulent romantic relationship.
