Sinopse

In *Abraço *, José Luís Peixoto presents 162 chronicles that revisit his past, exploring his childhood and youth experiences, his first loves, his friendships, and literary passions. Through these memories, the author, winner of the José Saramago (2001) and Oceanos (2016) literary prizes, reveals the essential elements that shaped his career and established him as one of the most original voices in contemporary Portuguese-language literature.

Originally published in 2011 and now released in Brazil for the first time, "Abraço" (Abraço) is José Luís Peixoto's deep dive into his passions, his affections, and a myriad of sensations that evoke his past in Portugal. Comprising 162 chronicles, the work acts as a "storehouse of memories and emotions," in which the author writes movingly about, for example, the experience of being a son and also a father, but also recalls his first loves, friendships, and characters from his childhood.

By reading these lyrically imbued texts, we are invited to accompany the boy from Alentejo as he discovers the world, literature, activism, anarchy, punk rock, sex, but also human evil, prejudice, and injustice. In the final part of the book, Peixoto blurs the lines between fiction and reality by writing about his interests in literature and authors such as James Joyce, Clarice Lispector, and his fellow countryman José Saramago.

As Itamar Vieira Junior highlighted on the back cover of this issue, "The pages of Abraço bear the mark of José Luís Peixoto, who is, without a doubt, one of the most admired authors in our language. [...] Each text draws from the author's singular experience and, in many ways, always achieves something that perhaps belongs to all who refuse to ignore the fascination of life and its wonderful details. [...] Reading this Abraço is like being in a house full of books. Only those who love literature know what I mean."
