Considered the founder of Portuguese theater, Gil Vicente wrote, directed, and even performed more than forty plays throughout his life. In "Auto da barca do inferno ," a complex dramatic allegory that satirizes the Catholic final judgment, Gil Vicente presents two boats: the boat of hell and the boat of glory. Many souls are judged, including that of a shoemaker, a moneylender, and a corrupt friar, and most are condemned to hell. The characters do not have particular psychological characteristics, but rather represent existing social types.
