Considered by the English newspaper The Guardian to be Jo Nesbø's most ambitious book and compared to The Silence of the Lambs by The Times , The Snowman is his most chilling book.
The first snow of the year falls on Oslo on a cold November day. Birte Becker comes home from work and compliments the snowman her husband and son made in the garden. They are both surprised—they hadn't made any before. Looking out the window, the boy Jonas notices that the white figure is facing the house, its black eyes fixed on the window. On them.
When Inspector Harry Hole receives a letter from the self-proclaimed Snowman, he doesn't suspect the dark meaning of this nickname. Only after discovering alarming commonalities between several disappearances in Norway does the officer realize he's involved in a much larger plot, one that could test the limits of his sanity.
While it's common for missing people to return with a trivial explanation, he suspects a connection between Jonas's mother's fate and the letter she received signed by the Snowman. As they continue their investigation, the inspector and his team encounter several similar unsolved cases from the last decade: all the victims are married women with children, always during the first snowfall of the year.
“Fiendishly complex and terribly enjoyable.” - The New York Times Book Review
