Sunny is 12 years old and has always lived on the border between two worlds. The daughter of Nigerian parents, she was born in the United States; her features are African, but she is albino. An outcast, unable to go unnoticed. The sun is her enemy. It punishes her delicate skin and exposes it to curious gazes. There seems to be no place where she fits in. It is under the moon that the girl lets loose, playing soccer with her brothers.

And then she discovers something incredible—she's actually a leopard in a world of sheep. Sunny is someone with a latent magical talent. More than that: she's a free agent. A person with powers, but born to ordinary parents.

Soon she becomes part of a quartet of magical students, researching the visible and invisible, learning to alter reality, being chosen by a mentor and finally obtaining her juju knife - with which she is able to perform her spells.

But will this be enough to find and stop a serial killer who's murdering children? A dangerous man with plans to open a portal and bring about the end of the world?
