Crime Scene: Violence and Realism in Contemporary Brazil

Violence is a reality that every Brazilian lives with, or tries to live with. Sometimes our behavior is conditioned to such an extent that we become complacent in this strange coexistence. This book is the result of research on the presence of violence and crime in Brazilian art and literature. The author seeks to show how the reality of violence, deeply linked to the reality of large cities developing in the second half of the 20th century, poses a major challenge to literature and the arts, while also revealing a path of renewal and reformulation of content and its expressions. • Karl Erik Schollhammer is a renowned literary theorist and critic, professor in the Department of Literature at PUC-Rio. He is the author, co-author, and editor of several books, including *Contemporary Brazilian Fiction*, published by Civilização Brasileira in 2009, part of the Coleção Contemporânea (Contemporary Collection). • He holds a PhD in Semiotics and Latin American Literature from Aarhus University (1991).
