One day, and perhaps it will be a long time, men will approach, taking the cacao trees to the mountaintop. The forests will be cut down, the woods vanquished, Cajango a mere shadow. Cajango's life, since the age of 11, has been about revenge. Witnessing the murder of his parents and siblings by gunmen, amid the struggle for control of the cacao plantation in southern Bahia, he is taken by his godfather to the Inuri Indian, his paternal uncle, so that he will not be found by his family's killers who, upon discovering there is a survivor, swear to kill him. Deep in the jungle, he learns to hunt and kill, and prepares to avenge the deaths of his family.
