Rio de Janeiro, 1906. After years living abroad, Carolina de Menezes, known as Lina, returns to Brazil excited to discover everything about her hometown. The daughter of a consul who always encouraged her independence, her adventures turn her life upside down when she finds a body floating in the Carioca River during a New Year's Eve celebration.

The son of a debt-ridden baron, Henrique Sodré is known for his irresistible charisma, good looks, and bad reputation. No self-respecting lady would marry him unless he committed to change. His cousin, Gustavo Sodré, is reserved, intelligent, and autistic. And, according to reports, he hides his incorrigible bohemian side. Inseparable, the two never intended to fall in love—much less with the same woman.

Liberal for her time, Lina breaks the social rules that try to restrict her freedom and finds support in the friendship of two notorious bohemians. And, amid regattas, carnival groups, and scandals, what began as a flirtation becomes the downfall of the three young people's lives: an unimaginable love that could even destroy them.
