Democracy, violence and injustice

With 19 articles written by intellectuals and members of human rights organizations, the authors examine the transition from authoritarianism in the 1980s, the state's inefficiency in controlling arbitrary practices, the fight against impunity, and the threat these factors pose to the legitimacy of democratic governments in the region. Among the aspects addressed in the book are the illegal violence of torture, the role of the police, racial discrimination, and the need for institutional reform to ensure access to justice. Even after the creation of new constitutions, these reforms have not been implemented, perpetuating arbitrary practices by police officers, for example.
