Commander-in-Chief of Brazilian troops operating in the Republic of Paraguay
For the first time, the reader has full access to the Diary of the Count of Eu.
Written in French between March 1869 and April 1870—two days before the Count's departure for the Paraguayan War until his return at the end of the operation—the diary was transcribed, translated, and annotated by historian Rodrigo Goyena Soares. This edition also includes a foreword by historian Ricardo Salles, a chronology, and an insert. It is a historical document that records a singular figure, still little known to the general public, and the end of a critical period in the history of Imperial Brazil.
As historian and anthropologist Lilia Moritz Schwarcz notes in the book's afterword: "If that weren't enough, we must also (and above all) praise the excellent work, in the form of notes and updates, by Rodrigo Goyena Soares, who [...] situates his reader in a still-slippery context. Finally, an excellent chronology helps us understand the period of the war in which this Diary is set and follow its final unfolding. It is as if we see our Count trying to deal with the impasses of a war already lacking gallantry."
