Education and Emancipation brings together captivating and timely essays by Theodor W. Adorno, considered one of the most influential and brilliant intellectuals of this century.

The great disasters caused by Nazism and dictatorships led the thinker to value the importance of educational systems in the construction of democratic societies.

Thus, in Education and Emancipation , the author observes how education can lead to barbarism and domination, something that Nazism revealed by propagating a “false culture” in educational institutions, which prevented critical thinking.

One of the philosopher's main questions is how this world, so scientifically and technologically developed, can simultaneously harbor so much poverty. Paying attention to what's happening in the world requires understanding people's upbringing and analyzing the role of both educational institutions and the media.

In this book, which brings together several of Adorno's texts, the philosopher reflects on a variety of issues, analyzing the effect of the media on the education of the population and its importance for the formation of a freer society, thinking about the role of teachers in this process and indicating how educational strategies can lead to a path of barbarism.

These texts reveal Theodor W. Adorno's interest in the emancipatory dimension that should promote education, culture and ethics aimed at the formation of democratic people.

With this work, the philosopher reaffirms his importance in the discussion of issues in favor of culture and against "false culture." Contrary to the image of a dense and difficult-to-access thinker, he brings together captivating and contemporary essays, such as "What It Means to Elaborate the Past," considered a true lesson in dialectics, as well as texts such as "Philosophy and Teachers," "Taboos Concerning Teaching," "Television and Education," "Education Against Barbarism," among others.

Sobre o autor

Theodor W. Adorno
