Between God and the Devil proposes a qualified reading of the diverse contexts and locations of European social and religious history to address the phenomenon of holiness. Moving between history, religion, and anthropology, the work discusses the diverse experiences of visionary women from the Middle Ages (notably Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century) and the Portuguese Modern Age (persecuted by the courts of the Portuguese Inquisition in the 16th and 17th centuries).
