Ganga-Zumba, or Great Lord, was the first leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, which he governed from 1670 to 1678, preceding his nephew Zumbi. Palmares was the sublime fruit of the thirst for freedom, where runaway slaves defended themselves so they could live without persecution, punishment, or suffering. João Felício dos Santos (1911-1989) is known as a historical novelist, in which research coexists with literary creation. In 1964, the book Ganga-Zumba was adapted for the screen by Cacá Diegues with the same title.
