WAR IN THE HEART OF THE CERRADO

In WAR IN THE HEART OF THE CERRADO, Maria José Silveira gives voice to a character little explored in Brazilian historiography. "We often don't know if what is said about Damiana is true, whether she was beautiful, or the exact words she spoke to encourage her tribe not to give up fighting for the freedom to grow their own food and work only as long as they consider necessary." What historical accounts reveal is a character who tried, in vain, to expedite peace between the Kayapó and the inhabitants of Vila Boa, a process that, as we know, still has consequences for the formation of Brazilian society today.
