War memories have always been etched in the Dubinksy family. Little Stewart grew up with the image of his father fighting alongside the Allies. In the recesses of his memory, he could glimpse the young soldier David rescuing his future wife from the horrors of the concentration camp. However, when Stewart finds a bundle of letters from his time at the front after his father's death, he discovers a previously unknown man who had always refused to talk about the war. As he pieces together the puzzle of his father's past, fitting together pieces from military files and the veteran's notes, Stewart begins to piece together a disconcerting chain of events. In reality, David was a lawyer for the Department of Military Justice, close to the legendary General Patton. In November 1944, he had received orders to arrest Robert Martin, a major in the Office of Strategic Services, the precursor to the CIA. In the eyes of the high military commander, Martin seemed to be acting under orders from others, ignoring his own commanders. In pursuit of the rebellious major, David follows the heart of the military conflict, parachuting into the city of Bastogne, which was burning to the rhythm of the Battle of the Bulge. Assuming command of a depleted company, David finds soldiers on the brink of despair, men who desert constantly, fighting for their very survival amidst unimaginable carnage and chaos. By reconstructing the horrific events and the agonizing choices his father had to make on the battlefield, in the courtroom, and in love, Stewart gains a more precise understanding of his past, his father's character, and the brutal nature of the greatest conflict in history.
