Sinopse
Roberto Lobato Corrêa and Zeny Rosendahl organized *Introduction to Cultural Geography*, a collection of classic and recent articles written by foreign and Brazilian geographers that retrace, at a theoretical level, the trajectory of Cultural Geography worldwide. A significant subfield of geography that analyzes the spatial dimension of culture, cultural geography spread from Europe and has existed for a century. However, in Brazil, it does not yet enjoy the same importance it has achieved in the United States and Europe. The purpose of this book is, therefore, to contribute to the dissemination of cultural geography among us, which began in the early 1990s. Traditionally, since the beginning of the 20th century, this spatial dimension has been focused on through themes such as lifestyles, cultural landscapes, cultural areas, the history of culture in space, and cultural ecology. The output of geographers was extensive, with the Berkeley School, led by Carl O. Sauer, standing out. The book begins with a 1931 article by Sauer, followed by the introduction, written by Philip L. Wagner and Marvin W. Mikesell, to the book Readings in Cultural Geography, published in 1962. It discusses the themes of Sauer's cultural geography. The texts by Denis E. Cosgrove and James S. Duncan represent critiques of Sauer's geography. The short, dense text by Cosgrove and Peter Jackson introduces us to the propositions of the so-called New Cultural Geography. French cultural geography could not be absent from the collection. Paul Claval offers an essay on the French contribution to this subfield of geography. The last two texts, written by the organizers of this work, explain the cultural approach to urban and religious themes.
