Jangadeiros: a courageous journey in search of rights in the Estado Novo

In 1941, during Getulio Vargas's Estado Novo (New State), four fishermen were the protagonists of a true epic: Jacaré, Jerônimo, Manoel Preto, and Tatá left Ceará for Rio de Janeiro on a raft! Unbelievable, but true. Their goal was to demand rights they believed they possessed that could improve their lives and the lives of hundreds of thousands of other fishermen. Their feat attracted the attention of the press and political authorities and was recognized by a presidential decree incorporating the fishermen into the Maritime Retirement and Pension Institute, which guaranteed social benefits for the sector.
