The protagonist of the story is the rogue Leonardo, son of Leonardo-Pataca and Maria da Hortaliça, and the memories of life in Rio de Janeiro during the time of King João VI were recounted to Manuel Antônio de Almeida by the militia sergeant Antonio César Ramos.
