Mirage of Peace: Israel and Palestine - Processes and Setbacks

The central theme of the writings is the conflict between Israel and Palestine, which reveals social, cultural, religious, and political aspects of both nations. The articles that comprise the book, organized by historical chapters, were primarily published on the BBC Brasil website, but also in O Estado de São Paulo, Jornal da Tarde, Globo News, and Carta Capital. The analysis spans 1995, the year of the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, until 2009. Over these 14 years, the journalist shows how Israel's conflict with the Arab world has cyclical characteristics. Relations between Brazil, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority appear in several texts, as do Brazilian, Israeli, and Palestinian figures the author met through her reporting. The book addresses the main obstacles to resolving the impasse and the radicalization of pro-violence discourse that occurred in both societies, along with the loss of confidence in the possibility of peace. Several episodes were the subject of reflection: the expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the construction of the Wall, the strengthening of Hamas, the suicide bombings against Israeli civilians, as well as the numerous failed negotiations and the second Intifada.
